“His work made it impossible for him to get home oftener than every other weekend.”这句英文，意义易于了解，但难于翻译。今译作“他的工作使他不能比隔周一次的周末更时常地回家”。感到不像中文，不知应该怎样翻译才好？

他因工作关系，只能隔周在周末回家一次。

His wealth enables him to do anything.（他有钱什么都可以做。）〔He can do anything because he is rich.〕

The sight of the orphan always reminds me of her parents.（一见到那孤儿，我就想到她的父母。）〔Whenever I see the orphan，I remember her parents.〕

Bad weather prevented us from starting.（天气太坏，我们无法动身。）〔We could not start because of bad weather.〕

Careful comparison of them will show you the difference.（你只消仔细比较一下，就可发现不同。）〔If you compare them carefully，you will see the difference.〕

A few steps across the lawn brought me to a large，splendid hotel.（走过草地几步，我就到了一个华丽的大旅馆。）

A bit of knowledge kept me from making a big mistake when an important question was to be decided.（我因稍具知识，所以在决定重要问题的时候，还没有犯大的错误。）

“我和王君久别重逢。”译成英文为：“I met Mr. Wang again after a long parting.”。不知译得正确否？

“举手”英文说raise one’s hand，是举起一只手来；如遇到强盗，表示不抵抗时，即说hold up one’s hands，是举起双手。通常表示赞成，大家举手时，也说raise their hand行吗？因为若说raise their hands，岂不是每人举起双手来了吗？到底应该用单数还是复数？

They all raised their hands.

在美国大学里有associate professor和assistant professor，都是我们说的副教授，二者不知有何分别？又，instructor和lecturer都是讲师，其分别何在？

英文中对妇女的称呼，有madam和madame二字，不知在用法上有何不同？请分别详为说明。

“你不能再迟疑了。”译成英文“You cannot hesitate any more.”并不为错，但有人说不如译作“No more hesitating for you.”。分明是一个动作，为什么要译成名词呢？

He had given up school without the knowledge of his parents.（他的父母不知道他已辍学。）〔His parents did not know that he had given up school.〕

We were greatly disappointed at her absence.（她没有去，使我们大为失望。）〔We were greatly disappointed to find that she was absent.〕

He is content in spite of his great poverty.（他虽则很穷，却是满足的。）〔Though he is very poor，he is content.〕

We informed him of their refusal to help.（我们已告诉了他说他们拒绝援助。）〔We informed him that they（had）refused to help.〕

In spite of the love of the parents for their child and their fears for her safe-ty，they both knew that their beautiful daughter was an incredibly stupid，dull little girl.（尽管父母疼爱他们的孩子，担心她的安全，他们都知道他们那个美丽的女儿是一个极其愚笨的小女孩。）

One baby after another. Six children half frozen huddled in one bed. No fire in the stove.（小孩接连生出。六个孩子挤在一张床上，冻得半死。火炉里没有火。）

“他是我父亲的一个朋友”一句话，译成英文的“He is a friend of my father.”，被改正为“He is a friend of my father’s.”。句中已经用了属格（即所有格——编注）介词的of，后面再加〔’s〕，岂不是重复了吗？原译的一句，在文法上有什么不对的地方？
