让世界认识一个真实的中国

It is now common knowledge that the policy of reform and opening up has accelerated the rise of China\'s international status and therefore to integrate into the world has become increasingly important for our country. However, in face of the growing strength of such a huge country as ours, there is not only approval and compliments from the outside world, but suspicion or even hostility as well.
Take the Beijing Olympic Games as an example. As a fulfillment of our country\'s hundred-year-old Olympic dream, the games were \"truly exceptional\" according to President Rogge of the International Olympic Committee. But what was also exceptionally shocking about these games were the obstruction of the torch relay and even some violent attacks against the Chinese torch bearers.
Among other complicated factors, the negative feelings against our country have arisen from the limited understanding or misunderstanding of our country. For most foreign friends who don\'t have the chance to learn about China in person, their understanding of our country mainly comes from their media, which unfortunately tends to be biased in many cases. Therefore, to let the world understand the real China has become a lasting and challenging mission in the course of our peaceful development.
An old friend of mine, Xiang Bing, president of the Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business, has been frequently invited to speak at various international forums. On February 28 last year, he was invited by the All Party Parliamentary Group for East Asia Business (APPG) in UK at Parliament House in London to offer his opinions on China-related issues. Those international occasions gave him the chance to get China\'s message across. Obviously communications like this would help the world to learn about the real situation in China.
A large number of the top government officials and SOE executives in our country have both an in-depth understanding of China and a platform to share their understanding with the opinion leaders and influential figures. If they can communicate in English, the world language, they will contribute to promoting the world\'s understanding of China and create a favorable international environment for our country\'s sustainable development. Our Intensive English Training Program (IETP) has served such a purpose, that is, to help our top government officials and SOE executives to cultivate their ability in English communication.
