Abstract

This book is an attempt to provide multiple perspectives for an approach into the insight of English lexical motivation and lexis teaching.

As a fresh issue in linguistics, motivation study stems from the proposal as principle of arbitrariness made by Saussure. (2001) Hence, it is necessary to clarify the relationship between arbitrariness and motivation of linguistic signs, which is to be a theoretical basis for the issue that follows. For the ultimate goals of the whole book, the issue of the relationship between the two needs clarification before we could get started with the main topic—the study of lexical motivations and lexis teaching. The book on motivations of new English lexis serves as a detailed analysis of lexical motivations, which is in turn to support the theory. It is noted that both the arguments over arbitrariness and motivation, and the study on the issue of motivations reflect cognitive process of human beings. In this sense, cognitive linguistics constitutes another theoretical basis for the whole study.

This book is composed of ten chapters.

Chapter One is a brief introduction to the whole book. This chapter provides with a new definition of motivation, a new classification of motivations of linguistic signs, an explanation to the conceptual characteristics of motivation, and the framework of the whole book.

Chapter Two gives a brief overview of the process of the arguments over arbitrariness, motivation and iconicity, which indicates a cognitive progress in this book. This argument has come about as a result of Saussure\'s proposal on the principle of arbitrariness. As to the relationship between arbitrariness and motivation in language study, opinions vary among scholars in different times, which can be concluded as follows: The first one is that linguistic signs are either arbitrary or motivated. Those who hold to this belief that linguistic signs are arbitrary contend that arbitrariness is prior to motivation. Those who are against the arbitrariness of linguistic signs claim that linguistic signs are motivated rather than arbitrary. The second one is that linguistic signs can be classified into two groups, one is arbitrary and the other motivated. The third one is that arbitrariness and motivation are two natures of linguistic signs viewed from different perspectives. On the one hand, linguistic signs themselves share both arbitrariness and motivation; on the other hand, both the two are the different perspectives from which we study linguistic signs. The combination of the three beliefs constitutes a perfect cognitive process. It is noted that the clarification of the relationship between the two concepts will improve, develop and even, to a certain extent, perfect linguistic theories, the most important being Saussure\'s philosophy of linguistics. In this sense, the purpose of this study is to make a contribution to linguistic theories, and to a certain extent, to fill in a theoretical void in motivation study.

Considering the two natures of linguistic signs, motivation study on English lexis is only the subdivision of the two. The study on lexical motivations is a blend of lexicology and motivation study. On the one hand, motivation study is a fresh issue in linguistics. On the other hand, a single word, in its true sense, is an entity conveying meaning together with its phonation. The fact that the linguistic system was once classified into phonetics, vocabulary and grammar, and then into phonetics, semantics and grammar, and still later into phonetics, vocabulary, semantics and grammar, highly suggests the rich contents and research significance of vocabulary study. In this study, motivations of English lexis will be studied from a large variety of perspectives, supporting the research objective and significance of this study.

Chapter Three overlooks the phonological motivations in English lexis, which mainly contains onomatopoeia, reduplication,
