445 reiterate, repeat, reaffirm


(1) reiterate指“重复说或做,重申”,有时可表示重复多次,是比较正式的用词。


Before proceeding with the work, the group leader reiterated what the teacher had said in his last lecture.


在进行这项工作前,小组长重复了老师上次讲课时所讲的话。


Premier Zhou reiterated that China would never be a super power and seek hegemony. 周总理重申,中国决不做超级大国和寻求霸权。


(2) repeat是表示“重复说或做”的普通用词。


Would you please repeat what you said? 请重复一下你讲的话好吗?


He repeated the experiment several times to prove his conclusion to be sound.为证实他的结论是正确的,这项试验他重做了好几次。


(3) reaffirm是“重申,再肯定,再证实”之意。


He reaffirmed his loyalty to his country. 他重申了他对自己国家的忠诚。


He reaffirmed China\'s consistent stand on that matter.


他重申了中国在这一问题上的一贯立场。

446 relax, loose, loosen, slack, slacken


(1) relax是“松弛,放松,轻松”,用于“紧张、严格性、控制、警惕”等,可作及物动词,也可作不及物动词。


Now let\'s stop working and relax for a moment.


现在咱们停下工作,放松一会儿吧。


The government has never relaxed its hold on prices.


政府从未放松对物价的控制。


We should never relax our vigilance in face of the threat of aggression.


面对侵略的威胁我们永远不应放松警惕。


You should relax a month or so before going back to work.


在回去上班前,你应该休息上一个月。


(2) loose多作形容词,也可作动词。作动词时,表示“使无约束,使松弛,放开,松开,解开”。


He loosed the birds from the cage. 他把鸟从笼中放飞了。


Can you help me to loose the knot? 你能帮我解开这个结吗?


Wine loosed his tongue. 酒使他说话多起来。


(3) loosen与loose用作动词时,意思相同,但loosen更常用。


Loosen the screw a bit. 把螺丝拧松一点。


This medicine may loosen your cough. 这药能缓解你的咳嗽。


*其他用法还有loosen one\'s belt, loosen (up) one\'s muscles, loosen a stone in a wall, loosen a tie/the soil/one\'s coat/discipline等。


(4) slack多作形容词,表示“松,不严格,松弛,懒散,马虎,萧条”等,有时也作动词。用作及物动词时,表示“放松(绳子等)”;作不及物动词时,表示“懈怠,疏忽,懒散,放慢,放松(努力等)”。


Slack the rope before trying to untie the knot.


在试图解这结之前,把绳子放松。


People usually slack off towards the end of a hard day\'s work.


人们在一天的努力工作临近结束时,往往会懒散下来。


The train slacked off (its speed) as it came into the station.


火车在进站时放慢了速度。


(5) ①slacken意思是“(使)缓慢,迟滞,变得不景气”;“(使)松弛,放松,(人)变得懒散”。


Slacken speed a little, please. 请放慢点速度。


Don\'t slacken the reins or the horse may bolt.


不要放松缰绳,否则马会惊跑的。


Don\'t slacken your efforts when the job is only half done.


工作只做了一半时不要放松努力。


Work slackens on a hot day. 天气炎热,工作就会迟滞不前。


The students tend to slacken off after the first few weeks when their interest is new. (也可用ease off/up)


在最初几周学生们对什么都感到新鲜之后,往往会懒散下来。


Slacken off those ropes there, there\'s a storm coming.(也可用slack away或slacken away)把那些绳子放松,要来暴风雨了。


House sales in this city usually slacken off during our severe winters.


在严冬时节,这个城市的房屋销售通常不景气。


②slacken up意为“降低速度或努力”;可以带宾语,也可不带。


The doctor advised him to slacken up for a few months, as his lifestyle was having a bad effect on his heart. 医生建议他放松上几个月,因为他的生活方式对他的心脏产生了不利影响。


Please slacken up your speed, I can\'t run as fast as you!


请放慢一下速度,我跑不了你那么快!


*以上两句也可用slack up。

447 release, relieve


(1) release表示“释放(犯人、气体等);松开,解开;投出(炸弹等);把……解脱出来”。在作“把……解脱出来,使解脱”解时,可与relieve换用。


The energy released by the chain reaction is transformed into heat.


由连锁反应释放出的能量被转换成了热。


The driver started the engine, released the brake, and was on his way.


司机启动了发动机,松开刹车,就上路了。


This payment will release/relieve you from further obligation to the company. 这项付款将使你对该公司不再有什么义务。


The universities are being asked to release some of their highly qualified scientific staff to industry.


我们正要求这些大学把他们的一些高水平的科技人员派往工业企业。


*此外,还可说release this news to the reporters/the public; release a new film等。


(2) ①relieve意为“减轻(病痛、负担、困难、紧张情绪);缓和(气氛、紧张局势);使……松一口气,使……放心、宽慰;解除(病痛等);使解脱(责任、义务)”。


Can this medicine relieve a headache? 这药能缓解头痛吗?


After the UN Secretary-General visited Iraq, the tension in the Gulf region was immediately relieved.


联合国秘书长访问伊拉克后,海湾地区的紧张局势立刻缓解了。


Anyway, you can\'t be relieved from fulfilling the agreement.


无论如何,你不能摆脱履行协议的责任。


②过去分词relieved可以用作表语。


I was/felt relieved to hear you were all right. 听说你安然无恙,我就放心了。


She seemed/looked relieved that things were better.


事情在好转,她似乎/看上去放心了。


③relieve还表示“赈济,救灾,解救”。


We have an unshirkable duty to relieve the poverty-stricken families.


我们有义不容辞的责任去赈济贫困家庭。


UNICEF works to relieve the suffering of children throughout the world.


联合国儿童基金会工作的宗旨是把全世界儿童从苦难中解救出来。


④relieve还可组成某些短语,如relieve from可表示“解除(病痛等);使免于……;使解脱(责任、义务);免除(职务)”。


This medicine will help to relieve you from your pain.


这种药将有助于解除你的疼痛。


Some leading cadres in that city were relieved from their posts for acting in collusion with the smugglers. 该市某些领导干部因与走私分子勾结而被免职。


⑤relieve of可以表示:


A.帮助拿(东西) 。


May I relieve you of that case? It looks terribly heavy.


我可以帮你提一下那个箱子吗?它看上去很重。


B.解除,解脱,使免于(职责等)。


You\'ll be relieved of some of your duties. 你将被解除某些职责。


So I asked to be relieved of my job, and returned to my hometown.


于是,我要求免去我的职务,回到了家乡。


C.辞退,解除(职务)。


You\'ll be relieved of your employment if you are absent from work again.


如果你再旷工,你将被解聘。


He was relieved of his post/his command. 他被解除职务/指挥权。


D.偷掉(诙谐用法)。


Some light-fingered rogue relieved me of my cup from my bike basket while I was buying something.

448 repair, mend, fix


(1) ①repair意思是“修理,修补”,用于破旧或损坏之物,如道路、钟表、衣物、车辆、建筑等。


As soon as the storm ended/was over, we set about repairing the damage.


暴风雨一停,我们就着手修补破损之处。


The landlord promised to repair the roof/that the roof should be repaired within two days. 房东许诺两天内修补房顶。


②repair可用于引申,表示“纠正,弥补,补偿”,如:repair the dam
